With the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA national championship events in the books, let's examine the most dominant individual performance in each of the eight national championship events held in March.

NCAA Division I: Mitchell Mesenbrink (Penn State)

Penn State's Mitchell Mesenbrink was the most dominant NCAA Division I wrestler all season and showcased that in Cleveland at the NCAAs. Mesenbrink finished the 2026 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with three technical falls and two shutouts en route to capturing his second straight national title at 165 pounds. After winning 15-0 in the semifinals over Columbia's Cesar Alvan, Mesenbrink defeated Iowa's Michael Caliendo in the finals by technical fall, 20-4. It was Mesenbrink's ninth victory in nine meetings over the Hawkeye four-time All-American.

NCAA Division II: Darion Johnson (McKendree)

McKendree's Darion Johnson entered the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships as the third seed at 184 pounds but left no doubt that he was the most dominant wrestler in the weight class. After opening his NCAAs with a 14-8 victory, Johson scored bonus points in his final three matches. In the quarterfinals, Johnson pinned Central Oklahoma's Branson Britten, a wrestler who defeated him in the first month of the season. In the semifinals, Johnson cruised to a 12-2 major decision over Chadron State's Keegan Gehlhausen, avenging a loss from the Midwest Classic in December. Johnson's finals victory came by technical fall over Central Missouri's Damon Ashworth. Before arriving at McKendree, Johnson competed at Western Wyoming Community College, where he was a two-time national runner-up.

NCAA Division III: Chip Guzman (North Central)

Chip Guzman of North Central has been one of the best NCAA Division III wrestlers over the past four years, but the national title had eluded him prior to this season. He finished as the national runner-up in each of the previous two seasons after finishing third as a freshman. This season Guzman dominated his competition from start to finish, compiling a 37-0 record en route to winning the national championship at 125 pounds. The most amazing achievement of his season was the fact that he had a one-hundred percent bonus rate. At the 2026 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, Guzman outscored his opponents 62-7. In the finals, Guzman earned a 19-3 technical fall over Coe's Brayden Parke.

NAIA Men: Gabe Gonzalez (Grand View)

Grand View's Gabe Gonzalez wrestled like a man on a mission at the 2026 NAIA Men's Wrestling Championships. Seeded No. 2 at 133 pounds, Gonzalez steamrolled his competition in Wichita. He earned bonus points in all five of his wins en route to winning the national championship. He finished the tournament with three pins, a technical fall and a 12-2 major decision. His finals victory came by pin over top-seeded Aaron Lucio of Southeastern.

NJCAA Men: Austin Richens (Northwest)

One could argue that the most dominant wrestler cannot be someone who won a match in overtime, which Austin Richens of Northwest did in the national finals. However, it cannot be argued that five pins in five matches is a dominant performance. Richens reached the national finals with four pins while only allowing a single point in those matches. In the finals, Richens faced Ira Jenkins of Southeast. Richens used a second-period reversal to go up 2-0. Jenkins added a pair of escapes to knot the score at 2-2 and send the match to sudden victory. In sudden victory, Richens countered a shot from Jenkins and threw him to his back to secure his fifth pin in five matches.

NCAA Women: Kylie Welker (Iowa)

Iowa's Kylie Welker completely dominated her competition at the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships in Coralville, Iowa. Welker's first four matches did not get out of the first period. She opened her tournament with a 35-second fall. She then cruised to an 11-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals. Welker advanced to the finals with a first-period fall over North Central's Shenita Lawson. In the finals, Welker won by 11-0 technical fall over McKendree's Destiny Rodriguez. She did not surrender a point in the national tournament en route to claiming her third collegiate national title.

NAIA Women: Cristelle Rodriguez (Doane)

While several wrestlers have a case for being the most dominant wrestler at the NAIA Women's Wrestling Championships, it's hard to argue against Doane's Cristelle Rodriguez. Rodriguez went 4-0 with four technical falls en route to winning the national title at 124 pounds. In addition, Rodriguez did not surrender a single point at the 2026 NAIA Women's Wrestling Championships. She scored 26 team points for Doane. Rodriguez finished her career as a three-time national champion with a career record of 85-2.

NJCAA Women: Bella Ngo (Umpqua)

Umpqua's Bella Ngo made a statement at the 2026 NJCAA Women's Wrestling Invitational, dominating her way to the national title at 131 pounds. Ngo, a former Iowa wrestler, went 4-0 with four technical falls. In the finals, Ngo needed just 38 seconds to earn a 10-0 technical fall over Kaylea Beauchamp of Indian Hills. Ngo scored an early takedown off a single leg before locking up a leg lace and turning Beauchamp four times to earn the quick technical fall.
