Mounds View leads 2023 MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament after Day 1, six returning champs advance to semifinals

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Mounds View, on the strength of four semifinalists, leads the 2023 MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament after Day 1 at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minnesota. The Mustangs finished the day with 181.5 points, 13 points ahead of second-place Kasson-Mantorville. Nationally ranked St. Michael-Albertville sits in third place with 160.5 points.

Mounds View's four semifinalists are Owen LaRose at 107 pounds, Brett Swenson at 114 pounds, Joseph Muhlstein at 189 pounds and Quin Morgan at 215 pounds.

Kasson-Mantorville has three semifinalists, while STMA has four.

Shakopee, ranked fifth in Class AAA by The Guillotine, enters Saturday in fourth place with 158 points and three semifinalists. Defending champion Simley finished the opening day in fifth place with 153.5 points and three semifinalists.

Six returning MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament champions secured spots in Saturday's semifinals. Those wrestlers are Blake Beissel (Hastings) at 121 pounds, Trey Beissel (Hastings) at 127 pounds, Logan Swensen (Wayzata) at 133 pounds, Landon Robideau (STMA) at 152 pounds, Charlie Millard (Homestead) at 160 pounds and Will Sather (Eden Prairie) at 285 pounds.

Top-seeded Blake Beissel, a Minnesota signee, advanced to the semifinals at 121 pounds with a second-period pin over Stillwater's Noah Nicholson. He will meet Wayzata's Luke Koenen in the semifinals.

Blake's younger brother Trey, seeded No. 4, topped Simley's Jake Kos 5-2 to earn his spot in the semifinals at 127 pounds. He will face top-seeded Tegan Sherk of St. Francis.

The top-seeded Swensen, who signed with South Dakota State, cruised to a major decision (18-7) over Shakopee's Calivin Miller in the quarterfinals at 133 pounds. His semifinal opponent is Willmar's Cavin Carlson, who advanced with a 3-0 shutout over rising eighth-grader Justus Heeg of Simley.

Robideau, one of the nation's top juniors, was dominant on the opening day, pinning Gunnar Mullen of Park in the quarterfinals. The STMA wrestler is in search of his third MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament title. He will meet Mound Westonka's Cooper Rowe in Saturday's semifinals.

Millard, a Minnesota signee, moved into the semifinals at 160 pounds with a first-period pin over Farmington's Edon Davis. Next up for Millard is a semifinal meeting with Shakopee's Jackson Barron, who was dominant in the quarterfinals, earning a 16-0 technical fall over Woodbury's Brad Little.

Sather, a Princeton commit, pinned Eastview's Jack Bauer in the quarterfinals. He will face the nation's No. 5 heavyweight in the semifinals, Brandon Valley's Navarro Schunke, a Kansas State football commit. On the top side of the bracket, Amery's Koy Hopke, the nation's No. 1 heavyweight, advanced to the semifinals with a first-period pin over Caleb Loomis of Rochester Mayo.

One of the most intriguing weight classes is 145 pounds with three NCAA Division I signees in the semifinals. Top-seeded Alex Braun (Woodbury), an Oklahoma signee, earned his spot in the semifinals with a 17-2 technical fall over Albert Lea's Nick Korman. He will face Willmar's Conlan Carlson in the semifinals. The bottom semifinals will pit Wyoming signee Tyson Charmoli of St. Francis against Minnesota signee Jack Nelson. Charmoli won by technical fall in the quarterfinals over Mounds View's Brady Swenson, while Nelson edged Apple Valley's Jayden Haueter 4-3.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 10 a.m.
